Population Dynamics and Diet of Rodents on Rangitoto Island, New Zealand, including the Effect of a 1080 Poison Operation

چکیده

New Zealand has four rodent species, the ship rat (Rattus rattus L.), Norway rat (R. norvegicus Berkenhout), kiore (or Polynesian rat, R. exulans Peale) and the house mouse (Mus musculus L.), all of which have been introduced. Their presence has implications for conservation management as they prey on native bird (Bell, 1978; King, 1984), reptile (Whitaker, 1978) and invertebrate (Ramsey, 1978; Bremner, Butcher and Patterson, 1984) species. They may also inhibit regeneration of native vegetation through eating seeds and seedlings and ringbarking saplings and mature trees (Campbell, 1978). C.J. MILLER and T.K. MILLER

Secondary Poisoning of Mammalian Predators during Possum and Rodent Control Operations at Trounson Kauri Park, Northland, New Zealand

A poison baiting operation at Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, New Zealand using first 1080 and then brodifacoum targeted possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rodents (Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus). Predatory mammals were monitored by radio telemetry during the operation. All six feral cats (Felis catus), the single stoat (Mustela erminea) and the single ferret (Mustela fur...

The Fate of Birds and Selected Invertebrates during a 1080 Operation

An aerial 1080 poison operation for possums at Waipoua Forest in spring 1990 applied cereal pellets lured with cinnamon. Numbers of brown kiwi, moreporks, fernbirds, kokako and common diurnal birds were monitored before, during and after the operation, while small numbers of insects and kauri snails were tested for 1080 uptake. Of the birds only blackbird and tomtit showed possible declines aft...

Comparing methods for assessing mortality impacts of an aerial 1080 pest control operation on tomtits (Petroica macrocephala toitoi) in Tongariro Forest

This study aimed to estimate the level of mortality of North Island tomtits (Petroica macrocephala toitoi) during an aerial 1080 possum poisoning operation in Tongariro Forest, New Zealand, and to evaluate transect-based alternatives to banding for monitoring tomtit populations. The operation used 12 g toxic (1080 at 0.15% weight/weight) cereal baits sown at 3 kg/ha. Transects were established ...

Estimating impacts of poison operations using mark-recapture analysis and population viability analysis: an example with New Zealand robins (Petroica australis)

Several recent studies have used “roll calls” – searches for individually-marked birds – to assess impacts of aerial poison operations on non-target species. Roll calls have advantages over methods such as 5-minute bird counts, call counts, and dead body counts, but roll calls are based on the assumption that detection rates are 100%, or that detection rates are constant over time and space. Th...

What Can We Learn from 21 Years of School Poisonings in New Zealand?

Background: Childhood poisoning is a significant international health concern. Very little is known about trends in exposures within schools and preschools. The objectives of this study were to investigate the data recorded by the New Zealand National Poisons Centre (NPC) on these types of exposures over a 21 year period (1989 to 2009) and to determine trends and propose strategies to reduce th...
